Tactile or Touch Quilts for Alzheimer’s Patients

by Mary Emma Allen on November 22nd, 2006

Large patchwork squares (13 x 15-inch) of various types of tactile, washable fabrics comprise The Touch Quilt found at The Alzheimer’s Online Store (http://alzstore.com/ ).  This type of blanket or quilt often brings comfort, as well as warmth to the Alzheimer’s patient.

I often found my aunt rubbing her fingers over her skirt, a sweater, or a blanket.  Sometimes she smoothed it with her fingers.  On other occasions she bunched it up in her hand and squeezed it as she rubbed it.

I didn’t realize then (in my early days of caregiving) that she probably enjoyed the feel of the fabric and found it comforting.  When I saw this blanket/quilt pictured and described at the Alzheimer’s Online Store, it brought back memories of Auntie.  “I bet she would have enjoyed just such a quilt,” I told myself.
