Alzheimer’s Notes

Spring Days for Alzheimer’s Patients

by Mary Emma Allen on April 23rd, 2007

If you live in the part of the world where springtime finally is appearing with warmer weather, budding flowers, and the out-of-doors calling, take advantage of it to participate in activities with your Alzheimer’s family member of friend.

Mother enjoyed spring with all the flowers and birdsong.  At her home and mine, I’d place a chair in her yard where she could be out of the bright sunlight, but still enjoy the sights and listen to the birds.  At the nursing home, in later years, we (sometimes with my grandchildren) wheeled her around the yard and chatted.  Even when she could no longer speak very well or much, we took her for strolls and we would do the chatting, often being greeted with her smile.

Find time to enjoy springtime (or whatever time of year it is where you are).  You’ll usually give them pleasure and yourself as well as you slow your pace to “soak in spring.”
