Alzheimer’s Notes

Protecting the Alzheimer’s Patient from the Sun

by Mary Emma Allen on June 6th, 2006

Excessive sun exposure, sunburn, and UV rays concern us, especially in the summer.  We make sure our children, grandchildren and we lather ourselves with sunscreen when we’re outdoors.

However, we may forget that our family members with Alzheimer’s won’t realize they’re susceptible to sunburn, too.  Like our children, we must make sure they’re wearing protective clothing and sunscreen.

Even though the book below is about and for children, reading it with and to an adult with Alzheimer’s may bring back memories and, for a short time, focus them on the importance of keeping their hat, sunglasses, etc. on when in the sun.

Also, it will help make youngsters aware that they may need to watch Grandma or Grandpa so they don’t get sunburned.
