How Does One Tell If It’s Alzheimer’s?

by Mary Emma Allen on February 26th, 2007

Often when a family member begins to have memory problems, it’s difficult to determine what is causing this problem.  We can’t diagose it ourselves, but there are some signs that reinforce our suspicions.  Some family members aren’t willing to admit there is anything wrong.  The person experiencing forgetfulness either doesn’t realize it or won’t admit it.  And some memory confusion may not be unusual for various circumstances.

An article, actually an answer by Dan O’Leary of the Mystic Valley Elder Services, in the Q&A section of the Malden Observer, gives you some information to consider.  He mentions that if there is forgetfulness and unusual behavior, don’t automatically assume  it’s Alzheimer’s.

Midst his informatin, Mr. O’Leary mentions the 10 warning signs given by the Alzheimer’s Association:

*Recent memory loss affecting job skills

*Difficulty accomplishing familiar tasks

*Struggling with finding the right word

*Disorientation to place and time

*Poor judgment

*Problems with abstract thinking

*Misplacing items

*Altered mood or behavior

*Changes in personality

*Loss of initiative
