Alzheimer’s Talk by Howard Gruetzner

by Mary Emma Allen on November 28th, 2006

As I browsed the Internet for information about Alzheimer’s, I noticed that Howard Gruetzner is the featured speaker at a program sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association and the Wise County’s Texas Cooperative Extension on December 14.  If only I lived nearby I’d enjoy hearing his talk.  (Unfortunately I live in New Hampshire.)

Howard Gruetzner, author of the book, Alzheimer’s: A Caregiver’s Guide and Sourcebook, helped me greatly when I first learned my mom was developing this disease.  I didn’t know where to turn when family members wouldn’t acknowledge something was wrong with Mother as she exhibited the characteristics her sister did, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

My neighbor, whose great aunt had Alzheimer’s, suggested Howard Gruetzner’s book.  It has been recommended to her by a nursing home director.  Our local bookstore didn’t carry it (we live in a small town) but ordered the book for me.  Then my neighbor and I read and discussed the book and our family members with Alzheimer’s.

Reading this book helped me understand Mother better, cope with the various situations, and set me on the path to learning as much as I could about this Alzheimer’s.  Eventually I began writing and speaking to encourage others.

According to the information I discovered about Mr. Gruetzner, he was, for more than 20 years, Director of Elder and Caregiver Services at the Heart of Texas Regional Mental Health Mental Retardation in Waco.  For more information about his talk, visit http://www.alz.org/northcentraltexas .
