Alzheimer’s Patients Pay Taxes, Too
Just because a family member has Alzheimer’s or resides in a nursing home, don’t make the mistake of thinking they don’t have to file income taxes. There may be some who have no income and are on Social Security and Medicaid.
However, many patients with Alzheimer’s own some property (their own home), have investments, or a pension. Depending on the situation and the amount of income generated, they may be liable for state and federal income taxes.
My mother fell under the latter category. I did have an accountant prepare her taxes because of her investments. My mother-in-law, who lived in an assisted living home, also had to file income taxes.
If you don’t know whether your family member must pay taxes, check with an accountant or the IRS. If you’re in charge of their financial affairs, make sure you keep good records. This will make tax filing easier; it also will help ward off complaints from other family members.
(Since they lived in the U.S., my mother and mother-in-law’s tax situations applied to this country. You’ll have to check into tax law in other countries if you don’t live in the U.S.)
Below is just one of many books on taxes you can check out.
