Alzheimer’s & July 4th Celebrations
“Let’s take Grandma to see the fireworks,” is a common comment or thought about holidays and family celebrations.
However, depending on the stage of Alzheimer’s, moving Grandma/Mom from her home, your home, or the nursing home can be very confusing to them. Parades and fireworks with loud noises and many people can be very confusing.
Alzheimer’s patients cope better when they’re following a routine, I discovered. Also, a nursing home will have holiday related activities geared for the resident and family. We participated in these with my mom and still could attend the traditional activities outside the home ourselves.
Check to see what is available for Alzheimer’s patients…at a senior center, day care, or nursing home that will best meet their needs, yet give them an opportunity to join into holiday festivities.
