Alzheimer’s Gifts for Grandma

by Mary Emma Allen on July 3rd, 2006

“I’m getting these for my grandmother who has Alzheimer’s,” remarked the young man, as he selected a stuffed toy and a children’s colorful picture book.  “I’m going to see her this afternoon at the nursing home.  I think she’d like these.”

Anyone who hasn’t cared for Alzheimer’s patients would consider the young man’s choice of gifts as unusual or inappropriate.  However, as family members with AD regress further back into their younger days, they frequently find comfort in stuffed toys and dolls.  Sometimes these may be the toys of their childhood.  Other times they consider dolls their children when young.

Also, the bright colors of the picture book might be pleasurable to her eyes.  Sometimes they also enjoy having you read to them, even though they might not understand the words.  The sound of our voice seems comforting, I discovered, when I read to my mother.

So rather than thinking the young man was selecting strange gifts for his grandmother, I realized he’d accepted her illness and wanted to bring her pleasure by his visits and gifts.
