Alzheimer’s & Forgetting to Walk

by Mary Emma Allen on November 12th, 2006

Cathy, of Cathy’s Rants an’ Ramblin’s at (http://arthritisrants.blogspot.com  ) commented on the blog post where I mentioned my mom forgetting to walk, or her brain no longer telling her feet what to do.  It was, as Cathy also relates, an abrupt realization that Mother could no longer remember simple acts like this.

“Mary Emma,” Cathy said, “I can so clearly remember when my mom first couldn’t walk.  She and I had been somewhere and were walking across the parking lot to the car.  I was holding her hand, as I often did, when all of a sudden, she just stopped.  No warning, nothing, just not one more step.

I looked at her and said, “Mom, why aren’t you walking?”

She replied, “I don’t know how.”

I had to explain to her, just like you did, “Pick up your foot and move it in front of the other.”

As you and I both know…eventually, they forget all.

Thanks for sharing, Cathy.  When Alzheimer’s caregivers, and former caregivers, share experiences with one another, they know they aren’t alone in facing this often traumatic period in their lives.
