Alzheimer’s Disease and long-distance caregivers.
Knowing what to do when someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease is hard enough. But what if you live thousands of miles away and cannot get home? Trying to figure out what to do, how to help, and what resources are available can be extremely stressful. But there are a number of guides available to help the long distance caregiver.
The National Institute of Aging has put together So Far Away: Twenty Questions for Long-Distance Caregivers. Organized in a question and answer format, it provides information, ideas, and resources to help make the long-distance caregiver feel more able to cope.
Other guides include The Long Distance Caregiving Guideby the University of California, Santa Barbara, and The Handbook for Long Distance Caregivers by the Family Caregiver Alliance.
There are also a number of organizations that can help:
The Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers provides a list of Geriatric care managers who work privately with older adults and their families to create a plan of care that meets the needs of the older adult.
Eldercare Locator can help find the nearest area agency on aging and communities services.
The National Association of Home Care (NAHC) provides a database of agencies throughout the country.
The American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) offers tips on choosing services and facilities and has a database on care facilities.
The National Council on Aging provides an online form to find out what assistance and benefits your family are entitled to.

Great article with lots of resources, Liz. I lived 275 miles from my mom…not so long distance when compared with many people. But it was frustrating when I couldn’t be at her home as much as I wanted and had difficulty finding people to help with her. That was more than 15 years ago. It’s good to find so many groups and organizations cropping up to help with long distance (and local) caregiving for Alzheimer’s patients.
