Alzheimer’s Notes

Alzheimer’s diagnosis mostly brings relief, not depression.

by Liz Lewis on March 7th, 2008

Many doctors appear reluctant to tell patients that they have Alzheimer’s disease, fearing that such a diagnosis would only further upset the patient.

But new research from Washington University in St. Louis indicates that the opposite is true.

John C Morris MD, co-author of the study, discovered that “Nobody wants to hear the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, but even that is preferable to recognizing there’s a problem and not knowing what it is. At least having the diagnosis allows people to make plans for the future, including treatment as appropriate.” In other words, both families and patients are more likely to feel relief and not increased anxiety upon learning the diagnosis.

Hopefully this study will encourage doctors not to keep patients and families in the dark.
