Alzheimer’s Coming “Out of the Closet”
When I mentioned to a friend that I thought Mother had Alzheimer’s, I recall the lady looking at me with a “How dare you say that about your mother” look. In the early 1990s, not so much was known about Alzheimer’s so family and friends often refrained from admitting someone was afflicted.
I noticed a difference in public opinion after President Ronald Reagan and his family made his illness public. To me, it seemed, they brought Alzheimer’s “out of the closet”. This seemed to enable others to admit a family member had this disease.
When people communicate, sharing ideas and experiences, it becomes much easier for everyone. More people are realizing this is a disease that can afflict anyone regardless of race, nationality, public standing, or income.
Families suffer everywhere, financially and emotionally, when their loved ones develop this disease. However, when we share experiences, we help comfort others and find comfort ourselves. Many have shared through books, the stories of their and their family’s experiences.
