Alzheimer’s Comes “Out of the Closet”
It’s great to see so much more interest in Alzheimer’s….. awareness and research with families and caregivers ready to share. The post Liz wrote about the articles in Newsweek and their links is just one of these resources as people are more willing to write and talk about this disease.
It was a rather lonesome road when Auntie and Mother became ill with Alzheimer’s in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The information for caregivers was more limited. Caregiver groups were few and far between. Facilities for assisting Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers were not plentiful. And families often didn’t want to admit their family member had Alzheimer’s.
I recall when I told a friend I suspected Mother was developing Alzheimer’s as Auntie had. The friend looked at me as though I was accusing Mother of some horrible deed, a “How dare you say that about your mother, Mary!” look. (However, the friend, who began to help me with Mother, soon realized my mom was exhibiting many of Auntie’s characteristics.)
With predictions of increased numbers of Alzheimer’s patients in future years, it’s good that this disease is coming “out of the closet” into the open. From this, hopefully a cure will be found before long…and in the meantime more help and comfort for both patients and caregivers.
