Alzheimer’s Caregivers Often Feel Alone

by Mary Emma Allen on December 9th, 2006

“It’s so difficult to find someone to talk to who understands,” an Alzheimer’s caregiver commented to me.

So she was seeking others in the same situation to chat with, share experiences with, and receive encouragement.  Caregivers also often find that other family members don’t want to be involved when a father or mother develops this disease.  So you don’t have them to talk with either.

When my mom and aunt were first afflicted, I didn’t have the Internet.  Blogs, chat groups, and e-mail groups didn’t exist.  Even though friends tried to understand, for some reason, it made them uncomfortable to deal with this person who was developing a different personality.

Fortunately I found my neighbor, who cared for her great aunt…and we discovered books on the topic.  Nowadays, there are many other resources, but those who write me and leave comments on my blog still seem to feel the sense of isolation as a caregiver.

I do hope what I write will give comfort and encouragment and you find the resources I suggest helpful.

*Find a blog you can visit regularly

*Find a chat group

*Find a fellow caregiver to share experiences with

*Find a support group at your local hospital, senior center, nursing home

*Read all you can to understand this disease and what your family member is going through

*Find some time for yourself!!
