Alzheimer’s Acrostic Poem
I was inspired by the acrostic caregiving poem at Nurture Your Own, which I mentioned in a November wrap-up post here at Alzheimer’s Notes. Why not write one of my own, based on the word “Alzheimer’s?”
A - Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease, but it need not devastate you nor your patient.
L - Laughter is the lifesaver when you’re an Alzheimer’s caregiver.
Z - Zip your lips when you want to make a sarcastic retort - Smile instead!
H - Hugs of encouragement are always appreciated
E - Enjoy something new you’ve experienced or observed each day
I - Ignore that which you can’t change and change only that which you can.
M - Memories are important to a family’s heritage, so write them down when your Alzheimer’s patient begins living them.
E - Enthusiasm for the still beautiful things in life will buoy your spirits daily.
R - Read for your enjoyment and to entertain your Alzheimer’s patient.
S - Say a prayer that all caregivers have the patience to sustain the journey.
Why don’t you try writing one and sending it to me? Better yet…enter it, or another type of poem, in the Carnival of Alzheimer’s. They can be fun, as well as a way of venting frustrations or learning there are things still to appreciate.
