Alzheimer’s - a Glimpse (a poem)
Alzheimer’s - a Glimpse
A wisp of thought,
A memory fleet,
A word, a sound, a sight ,
But meaning is not there.
She wanders back to former times,
And looks for family gone;
She sees me as another one,
In life from days ago.
This isn’t Mother as she was,
But someone in her stead;
She smiles, however, at my voice
And gifts me sunshine for that day.

Memories are really important and there are many ways we can record them. One initiative that I have noticed is currently being pioneered by the Alzheimer’s Society in the UK is to create a ‘Million Memories’ website. The project is a celebration of memories that allows people to share and preserve their memories while supporting those with memory loss. Check out: http://www.millionmemories.org.uk/. It’s worth taking a look and raising this issue in the public consciousness can surely not be a bad thing…
