Alzheimer’s Notes

A Supportive Spouse Makes a Difference

by Mary Emma Allen on April 18th, 2006

Frequently when I give talks about Alzheimer’s to caregiver groups, nursing home staff, and community organizations, my husband accompanies me.  I ask Jim to add his suggestions about being a supportive spouse when one has acquired the task of caring for a parent or relative with this disease.

I know it would have been much more difficult to care for my mother and my aunt if Jim hadn’t supported me, encouraged me, and helped.  He accompanied me on the long drives (275 miles each way) when I cared for Mother in her own home, helped me bring Mother to live with us, and was there for me when I had to make the decision to move her to a nursing home.  My aunt at first lived with my mother, and as her Alzheimer’s progressed, I had no choice but to find a nursing home for her.

I’ve mentioned the need for a friend or support group, when caring for someone with Alzheimer’s.  Also, if you’re married, a supportive spouse can help greatly as you go through this trying time in your lives as well as the life of your family member, or members.
