A Glass Full of Tears Giveaway at Alzheimer’s Notes

by Mary Emma Allen on July 30th, 2008

AlzheimersNotes.com

I’m offering a copy of A Glass Full of Tears, Dementia Day-By-Day by June Lund Shiplett as a giveaway here at Alzheimer’s Notes as part of the Bloggy Giveaways Carnival.

In this book, June Lund Shiplett shares the journal she kept during her husband Charlie’s encounter with multi-infarct dementia and the challenges she faced as his caregiver.  This is a particularly good book for a spouse caregiver since so many books are written from the child caregiver point of view, as mine was.

June Lund Shiplett is the author of numerous romance novels and is known to many readers of this genre.  Sometimes we don’t realize our favorite authors often face the same or similar challenges that we do.

Guidelines for the giveaway - Leave a comment below. Share with us, if you’d like, your role in regard to Alzheimer’s or another form or dementia. The giveaway is open only to those living in the United States or who have a US mailing address.

Deadline - the giveway will run until Aug. 5, 11:59 PM (eastern).  Make sure you leave your e-mail (it won’t be published) so I can contact you if you’re the winner.  Only one entry per person will be accepted.

My grandfather is experiencing dementia to a certain degree. He has good days & has bad days, but luckily, right now I think they are few & far between. It breaks my heart to hear my grandmother tell of how he treats her on his bad days.

Thanks for the opportunity to win.

My grandmother died of alzheimers when she was just 67. I would love to know more about this disease and help out others that either have it, or have a loved one who has it. I’m happy to see that nowadays, there is a medicine available to help, but I haven’t really found any conclusive facts about whether or not it works. Thanks for this wonderful giveaway.

I am a nurse at an Alzheimers Care facility.
I see the daily struggles and heartache that families go through. I have always thought that Alzheimers is one of the diseases that affects the whole family-perhaps more so than any other, on so many levels. Thank you for this generous giveaway.

My Dad has Alzheimer’s and I was just visiting to help my Mom with her cataract surgery. Such a horrible disease for patient and caregiver alike. this book would be very helpful to our family.

I was afraid to enter because I didn’t want to take up an entry space for someone who might be needing something like this or going through something like this right now.

The only reason I’m entering is because I had a grandparent who suffered with dementia and I’m married to a man who is 11 1/2 years older than I am. Either one of us could suffer before the other does, but just in case it ever happens (and I pray it never does), and just in case it’s him over me, I’d be interested in what that looks like, how to cope, how to help, how to love, what not to do, etc.

This subject matter has always been interesting to me. My husband and I have watched PBS specials about this and we are always saddened but interested.

If someone else enters with a greater need than mine, please take me off the list so that I’m not in the running or competing with someone who needs to get it. Otherwise, I’ll be happy to win this book so that my husband and I can read it together. Thanks. This was a very unique and thoughtful giveaway.

Number 1 never gets picked do they? We found out about four months ago that my Hubby’s grandmother has some form of dementia (can not remember the exact name)… So now the family is trying to deal with keeping Grandpa sane since he and grandma have NEVER been away from one another for more than 2 days since marriage… They are in their 90s and got married in there early 20s… Grandma is in a Therapy House because she also just had a small stroke so it’s a tough time right now… I think everyone of us would gain from reading this…

My hubby’s grandma is dealing with this now. It is so sad. It’s a horrible disease. I would love to know what the best way to help her is.

Thanks for the chance to win your giveaway.

I am a 35 year-old mother of 6 who is caring for my almost 81 year old mother who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s type dementia. We built an addition on for her to come live with us after my father died almost a year and half ago. She lived in a locked unit in an assisted living facility in the interim. I would love to get this book, because I would like to journal the joys and the trials of living with and caring for people with this disease, but have limited time to even do the laundry! To read an actual account will be an encouragement to me. Thanks

This would be great to share with my friend and her family who are currently going through trying to deal with her Dad’s Lewy Body Disease. My grandpa had this, but he passed away 8 years ago. It is hard to see someone you love go through dementia.

I have just discovered that both of my grandmothers are suffering from this. I am especially close to one of them and kind of overwhelmed at the moment.

I am a caregiver to my 28 year old son who has schizophrenia, it is unlikely he will ever get better. My heart goes out to anybody who copes with the day to day challenges, as well as losing their loved ones to diseases that affect the mind and memory. I would like to read this book as it may help me to relate to somebody who has gone through something like I am going through.

My father is dealing with some kind of dementia. The doctors don’t know what it is; they say it’s definitely not Alzheimer’s but the only other thing they’ve offered is something called Charles Bonnet Syndrome.

Anyway, this has been going on for about 3 years now. I still remember the call from my mom… My dad had dropped by the day before to drop something off, and she called me the next day, sounding panicked, asking if dad had seemed ‘weird.’ He’d been more anxious to leave than usual, but he’s always been kind of a grump so I didn’t think much about it. She told me that he was seeing people.

It has been really hard on my mom. She was still working about 30 hours a week at the time and enjoyed her freedom an independence. My dad was always a very controlling person, but he also didn’t really want to be bothered to go out or do anything. My mom had to retire because she was afraid to leave him home alone, because he was afraid to BE home alone.

He’s pretty heavily medicated these days, always a little bit loopy. He has good days and bad days, but I know my mom is really struggling. As I mentioned he was always very controlling, very independent; now he can barely remember how to do simple things, he forgets words for basic objects, he basically allows (and expects) my mom to take care of him.

She is an angel. I offer her as much help as I can, but … you know, I think a book like this would really help her.

Thanks for the very caring giveaway. I haven’t really spoken/typed this much about my dad’s condition since it first happened. I’ve just been hoping it would disappear as quickly as it showed up… but three years down the line, hundreds of doctors later, it doesn’t seem that’s going to happen.

My first job ever was working in a Nursing Home. I saw many different faces of Alzheimers and Dementia while working there- the good, the bad, and the incredibly sad. But also the very wonderful!
