Omega-3 Fatty Acid May Delay Alzheimer’s

According to a post by Ruth, at b5media’s Eating Fabulous blog, Omega-3 may  play a role in delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
“We know that omega-3 fatty acids are good for the brain.  We know that Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder.  Connect the dots….”  The UC-Irvine scientists have proven this.

More About Long Distance Caregiving

Liz and I’ve written previously about long distance caregiving, and Katelyn at Life Without Memories, mentioned Liz’s post.  She told about a friend who had to move and leave her mother behind in a nursing home, then asked for some tips for long distance caregiving.
The dilemma arises when you must decide whether to move your Alzheimer’s family member […]

What’s Alzheimer’s disease got to do with the way we cook food?

I got a tip from Writing in the Making to check out this article: Food Prep May Be as Important as Ingredients Themselves.
The article discusses a new study that was published in the April issue of the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences that indicates that the way we cook our foods can have […]

Alzheimer’s Disease: Links to recent research.

Commonly Used Pain Medications Do Not Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease - a study recently published in Neurology (scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology) finds that pain medications such as celecoxib and naproxen do not prevent Alzheimer’s disease. This is a direct contradiction to an early study that indicated that the use of these types […]

Alzheimer’s Patients Remove Jewelry, Glasses, Hearing Aids

“What a great idea,” I thought, as I read Liz’s post about the Columba bracelet for monitoring Alzheimer’s patients so caregivers know when they wander off.
However, will they keep it on?  Looking at the bracelet, it appears to be quite sturdy and secure.  So maybe it is one Alzheimer’s patients can’t remove without assistance.
When they […]

Columba Bracelet for wandering Alzheimer’s patients.

- conceal and/or camouflage doors
- install locks and alarm systems
- put labels on doors explaining purpose of room, ie bathroom, kitchen, bedroom
- figure out when wandering is most likely to occur and distract […]

New Poll - Should Alzheimer’s Patients be Electronically Tracked?

In the previous post, I discussed an article about possible plans to tag dementia patients and the elderly so they could be tracked by satellite for their safety.  This proposal has met with mixed reviews.
What do you think?
I’ve put up a new poll about this.  Vote in this poll to let us know whether you […]

Should Alzheimer’s Patients Be Electronically Tagged?

An article in the Manchester (England) Evening News, “Plans to Tag Dementia Patients,” introduces the idea of tagging older, or dementia affected, people so they can be tracked by satellite.  This proposal has been met with mixed reaction.
Balancing freedom and safety becomes the issue.  If someone has cared for a family member with Alzheimer’s or some […]

Spring Days for Alzheimer’s Patients

If you live in the part of the world where springtime finally is appearing with warmer weather, budding flowers, and the out-of-doors calling, take advantage of it to participate in activities with your Alzheimer’s family member of friend.
Mother enjoyed spring with all the flowers and birdsong.  At her home and mine, I’d place a […]
