Searching for Ancestors with an Alzheimer’s Family Member

When someone contacted me for information about my ancestors (I’m a genealogy buff), it brought back memories of searching for these people of long ago with my mom as she began her Alzheimer’s journey.  She was in the early stages, but began to tell more and more stories about her childhood and young adult years.
She […]

Childhood Memories Affect Alzheimer’s Patients’ Acceptance of Caregivers

Recently, while talking with a friend who takes care of Alzheimer’s patients’ dietary needs at a nursing home, I gained insight into why there might be unacceptance of some caregivers.  This can be influenced by childhood memories of the Alzheimer’s patients.

“Aren’t You Afraid of Developing Alzheimer’s?”

“Arent’ you afraid of developing Alzheimer’s since your mother and aunt had it?” I’m often asked.
I was caregiver for them and experienced their journey through Alzheimer’s from that aspect.  I’ve wondered, too, if this disease ran in families.  Mother and Auntie had two brothers who didn’t show any signs of Alzheimer’s.
However, I don’t have time […]

Alzheimer’s - a Glimpse (a poem)

Alzheimer’s - a Glimpse
A wisp of thought,
A memory fleet,
A word, a sound, a sight ,
But meaning is not there.

She wanders back to former times,
And looks for family gone;
She sees me as another one,
In life from days ago.

This isn’t Mother as she was,
But someone in her stead;
She smiles, however, at my voice
And gifts me sunshine for that day.

Experts advise that you prepare for care […]
