Detecting Alzheimer’s Without Autopsies

The main method to determine whether a person truly was afflicted with Alzheimer’s or not has been by doing an autopsy and examining the brain after death.  Sometimes this could be achieved by obtaining brain tissue by surgery while the person was still alive.  However, this was an invasive procedure.
Research by a team of scientists from David […]

Bird Watching for the Alzheimer’s Patient

Whenever I see birds gathering around a winter feeder nowadays, I recall the pleasure bird watching gave my mother as she journeyed into the depths of Alzheimer’s.  Jim and I had to move her from her New York State home to ours in New Hampshire during mid-winter.
Remembering her fascination with birds throughout her life, Jim […]

Using Photos & Paintings to Stimulate Alzheimer’s Memories

Sometimes showing Alzheimer’s patients photos, paintings, and pictures of events in their lives or similar situations sparks their memory or at least gives them pleasure.  You may find that the paintings of Grandma Moses may bring back memories for them.
I was substitute teaching in an elementary school today and spent some time in an art […]

Finding Support for Alzheimer’s Caregivers

So many Alzheimer’s caregivers I speak with have a difficult time finding support or just someone to talk with.  Even though more people are becoming knowldegeable about Alzheimer’s, it’s hard to find encouragement with the day to day care from someone who’s “been there” or is going through it.
I realize how fortunate I was to […]

Does Alzheimer’s Caregiving Strain Family Relationships?

Are relationships strained among family members when caring for parents with Alzheimer’s or similar dementia?  If so, what can we do about it?
Sometimes nothing, because family members become too emotional?  Or they’re focusing on the financial rather than the personal needs of the family member.
Or, they can look at the situation, not without emotion or […]

Nursing Home Care for Alzheimer’s Patients

Why did I have good experiences with the nursing homes caring for my aunt, uncle, mother, and mother-in-law while many others only have complaints and downright scary experiences, such as those related in the current issue of Reader’s Digest ?
A friend commented that she was pleased my mom had been cared for so well in the […]

A Gift for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver

I’ve mentioned gifts you can give the Alzheimer’s patient, but haven’t thought of the caregiver.  They need remembering, too, at Christmas and birthdays and “just because.”
Why not give them a “gift certificate” for a day or evening out with you taking care of the Alzheimer’s patient?  Make up a card with a “certificate” for time […]

Laura’s New Home for Christmas (An Alzheimer’s Story)

(In addition to being a blogger, I’m a writer, columnist, novelist, and speaker.  I thought you might enjoy occasionally one of my stories relating to Alzheimer’s.  This one, Laura’s New Home for Christmas, was published in a Christmas booklet of The Anglican Parish of Sawtill/Bonville [Australia])
“You’re not bringing your mother home for the holidays!”  Jennie […]

Christmas Gifts for Alzheimer’s Patients

Selecting Christmas gifts for Alzheimer’s patients can be challenging.  Also, what was an appropriate or appreciated gift in the beginning stages no longer interests them (if they even realize it’s Christmas) as Alzheimer’s gets more advanced.  Then the gift becomes something that is appreciated by the caregiver or enables them to make the patient look attractive.
At first gifts for […]
