Results of Alzheimer’s Caregivers’ Poll?

I’ve tallied the results from the Alzheimer’s caregivers’ poll, which was open for the past month.  These results give me an idea of the interests or experiences of my readers.  Hopefully this will enable me to better provide information that you desire.

An Alzheimer’s/Dementia Poem

Scott Stein’s grandmother, caregiver for her husband, died on Christmas.  About ten years ago, Scott wrote a poem inspired by his grandmother and her devotion to his grandfather, who was afflicted with dementia.
He posted it on his blog as a tribute to his grandmother.  I think you’d like to read, “Alzheimer’s, Max and Flo.”

Education - for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver

In a previous post, I discussed the fact that researchers seem to feel education may play a role in whether a person becomes afflicted with Alzheimer’s.  We also can talk about education and Alzheimer’s from another viewpoint - that of educating the Alzheimer’s caregiver about the disease.
I found, when caring for Mother and Auntie, that […]

Alzheimer’s Notes Mentioned at Cathy’s Rants and Ramblin’s

Cathy, at Cathy’s Rants and Ramblin’s, visited Alzheimer’s Notes, read my Christmas story, Laura’s New Home for Christmas, then posted her own story about her mom and Alzheimer’s and Christmas.
I wrote the story to give other caregivers encouragement and am pleased it brought back happy memories for Cathy, who published a beautiful post about her […]

Education - a Good Therapy for Alzheimer’s?

According to Medical News Today, education may be the “best pill” for Alzheimer’s along with intellectual activity.  This activity increases the “cognitive reserve” in Alzheimer’s patients, according to researchers.
Their findings indicate that ”a mere 5% increase in the ’cognitive reserve’ in the general population would prevent one third of the Alzheimer’s cases.”
This goes along with the increasingly […]

When Should Dementia Drivers Stop Driving?

When should you stop a family member from driving if you feel they’re becoming too forgetful and have poor judgment and reaction time?  How does it become evident that dementia or Alzheimer’s is causing someone to be a danger to themselves and others?
These aren’t easy decisions for the family member and the person with signs […]

Federal Help for Alzheimer’s Caregivers

Alzheimer’s Daily News pointed to the article in the Wall Street Journal that mentions the new Federal law, the Lifespan Respite Care Act,  passed by Congress before adjourning.  This act authorizes nearly $300 million in grants to the states to aid families who must hire temporary help to assist caregivers.
Home care for the elderly or disabled […]

Another Way to Save Alzheimer’s Caregiver Memories

Today I was catelogued the Christmas letters I’d written over the years to send to family and friends.  I enjoy receiving them and sending them.  So I’ve kept mine and other family members’ letters and cards.
At a family history writing workshop, a student remarked that she found putting copies of the Christmas letters into scrapbooks […]

Saving Christmas Memories of Alzheimer’s Family Members

I’ve been working on Christmas memories in my scrapbooks this afternoon with my family gathered around.  As I was going through pictures and notes to post I came across some I’d written down during Mother’s Alzheimer’s years.  We reminisced about them and Christmas with her in the nursing home.
I realized I needed to write down […]

Discovering Benefits for Seniors & Alzheimer’s Patients

Trying to find out what benefits are available for seniors or the ones you qualify for can be quite puzzing.  Since the majority of Alzheimer’s patients fall into the “senior” category, their caregivers often don’t know quite where to turn.
So it could be helpful to find resources that help with answering some of these questions.  A resource where […]
