Is Alzheimer’s Sometimes Mistaken for Alcoholism?

A story in Alzheimer’s Daily News (http://alznews.org ), referenced from the LA Times (www.latimes.com ), mentions that actress Rita Hayworth’s early Alzheimer’s symptoms (i.e. memory loss when it came to her lines) were mistakenly thought to be alcoholism.  Although she did drink quite a bit, it’s now believed her memory loss was due more to the early […]

Alzheimer’s Coming “Out of the Closet”

When I mentioned to a friend that I thought Mother had Alzheimer’s, I recall the lady looking at me with a “How dare you say that about your mother” look.  In the early 1990s, not so much was known about Alzheimer’s so family and friends often refrained from admitting someone was afflicted.
I noticed a difference in […]

Taking Alzheimer’s Patients Home for Thanksgiving

Once your family member has begun living in a nursing home, should you take them home for the holidays?  This becomes a difficult question and has to be answered on a person to person basis.
You can’t automatically say, “We must bring Mother (Father, Uncle Harry, Aunt Susie, etc.) home for Thanksgiving dinner.”  Also, you’re not […]

Arts & Crafts for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver

Caregivers need time for themselves and to relax.  Why not venture into some arts and crafts for the holidays?  In addition to this blog, I write one about Quilting and Patchwork (http://www.quiltingandpatchwork.com/).
Recently I participated in an Artist Showcase featuring many of the b5media bloggers in the Arts and Craft group.  This was hosted by Katelyn […]

Alzheimer’s & Forgetting to Walk

Cathy, of Cathy’s Rants an’ Ramblin’s at (http://arthritisrants.blogspot.com  ) commented on the blog post where I mentioned my mom forgetting to walk, or her brain no longer telling her feet what to do.  It was, as Cathy also relates, an abrupt realization that Mother could no longer remember simple acts like this.
“Mary Emma,” Cathy said, “I can so clearly […]

Can Alzheimer’s Be Detected in the Eye?

According to another article in the Alzheimer’s Association’s (www.alz.org ) Fall 2006 newsletter, researchers are hopeful they can detech Alzheimer’s through early changes in the eye.  Researchers at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, by using a new non-invasive laser technology, have detected Alzheimer’s symptoms in the “lens of the eyes of mice engineered […]

Is Alzheimer’s Increasing in African-Americans?

According to an article in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Fall 2006 newsletter, the occurrence of Alzheimer’s may be likely to increase in African-Americans more rapidly than in the non-Hispanic white population.  Also, on their web site, www.alz.org, there is discussion about this under “The Silent Epidemic.”
Some of the risk factors considered in this conclusion: increasing age […]

Alzheimer’s & the Shrinking Brain Observed

My mom stood in the doorway shuffling her feet but not moving.  She looked at me and asked, “What do I do?”
I touched her right leg and answered, “Move this leg.”
“Oh,” she remarked, then lifted her foot.  “Like this.”  And she started walking across the room.
I’d often wondered, as Mother gradually lost her capabilities, if […]
