Getting Mother to drink enough water, or any fluids for that matter, became a challenge as Alzheimer’s progressed. She was more likely to drink juice or tea than water. But sometimes even much of those was difficult.
After she’d taken a couple of sips, she’d clamp her lips tightly shut and refuse to open them, much like […]

“Let’s take Grandma to see the fireworks,” is a common comment or thought about holidays and family celebrations.
However, depending on the stage of Alzheimer’s, moving Grandma/Mom from her home, your home, or the nursing home can be very confusing to them. Parades and fireworks with loud noises and many people can be very confusing.
Alzheimer’s patients cope […]

Hallucinations….seeing people and things that aren’t there, looking into the mirrow and seeing someone not themself, thinking an object is something other than what it is…are common with Alzheimer’s patients.
My mom looked at the reflections in windows or our patio door at night and thought they were people in a store. She might see a […]

Carol Moxely has helped families of Alzheimer’s patients create Memory Albums for and about their family member and raise awareness of this disease. Her father had Alzheimer’s disease. Carol made a Memory Album for him and taught others how to do this.

Check with the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) to see what is in place concerning a “safe return program” in your area.
Wandering away from home by Alzheimer’s patients is a big problem. They can so easily slip out of the house even when you think you are very diligent. Depending on weather conditions and degree of safety of […]

Because an Alzheimer’s patient doesn’t realize they’re encountering unsafe conditions or causing them, we have to watch them carefully and safety-proof our house or theirs, wherever they’re living. The Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org ) and other organizations can give you information on establishing safety within the home.
When Mother lived in her home, we eventually had to unplug her […]

“I certainly got a lot of knitting done during those six months,” a friend remarked as she told me about visiting her mother during the time she was in a nursing home with dementia. Fran and her sisters alternated between visiting for a couple of hours each day. She said that when it was her turn, […]

Some caregivers experience great anger, even bitterness, that their family member developed Alzheimer’s disease. This is a devastating disease, but I discovered that it doesn’t have to devastate you.
“That’s fine for you to say,” you might reply. “You didn’t have to go through what I did.”
Each of us has our own struggles to face because all our […]
